In 1650, approximately 500 million people lived on Earth. In the next 200 years, the population doubled to 1 billion people (Carter-Edwards et al, 550). Starting around the 1700s, the population began to grow at an exponential rate (Carter-Edwards et al, 550).
The population growing at a rate that meets its biotic potential has had and continue to have many negative consequences on the environment.
